Transporting a partially filled IBC container: how does splashing liquid affect the handling of a tractor or wheel loader?

Transporting a partially filled IBC container requires anticipatory driving, as the free liquid level shifts the load’s weight whilst the vehicle is in motion. When braking, the liquid shifts forwards; when accelerating, it shifts backwards; and when cornering, it shifts towards the outside of the bend. This shift is particularly noticeable in the steering, especially when the container is being transported on a tractor’s lifting device or at the front of a wheel loader. Adjust your speed to suit the route, make smooth movements with the controls and allow the liquid to settle before the next stage of the work. This ensures that water application, brushing and the transfer of farm liquids proceed in a controlled manner, even on uneven ground.

Transporting a partially filled IBC container shifts the weight of the load

In a 1,000-litre IBC container, 600 litres of water equates to approximately 600 kilograms of moving liquid; including the weight of the container and its rack, the total load is greater than this. When the machine hits a bump, begins to turn or comes to a halt, the liquid continues to move in its original direction for a moment. The container remains stationary on its rack, but the movement of the liquid can still be felt as a delay and lateral sway in the machine’s behaviour. An IBC container that is not quite full can be transported by driving carefully

Start slowing down for a bend whilst on a straight stretch of road, keep your steering movements steady and only accelerate once the machine is travelling in a straight line. When operating a wheel loader, it is advisable to keep the load in a low position, in accordance with the machine’s operating instructions. A well-organised workflow reduces the number of movements made in a hurry. Plan your refuelling point, route and points of use before setting off, so that you do not have to transport the tank unnecessarily whilst it is still partly full. Always secure the tank to the rack before driving, and check the fastenings during the working day as well if the route involves a lot of vibration.
