Before setting off, the driver must check, amongst other things, that the load is securely fastened, that the tractor is under control, that visibility is adequate, that the lights are working, that the dimensions are within the permitted limits, and that the vehicle is travelling at the correct speed. The properties of the liquid may impose additional requirements on the transport.
A solution designed for use on private property may not necessarily be suitable for road use as it stands. The tractor’s registration details, the manufacturer’s instructions and the technical specifications of the trailer and coupling device determine what kind of load the combination can carry. The following checklist will help you identify the points to be checked. It does not replace the vehicle manufacturer’s instructions, registration details or the authorities’ assessment of an individual vehicle combination.
Transporting an IBC container by tractor begins with calculating the load dimensions
A full IBC container is a heavy load. Water has a mass of approximately one kilogram per litre, so 1,000 litres of water weighs approximately 1,000 kg. The total load also includes the masses of the tank, the metal cage, the rack, the hoses and other equipment. Liquid fertiliser or preservative may be heavier than water, so volume alone does not indicate the actual mass of the load.
Compare the total mass with the permitted loads for the tractor, front loader, lifting device, quick-coupler and tank rack. Also check the axle loads and the load-bearing capacity of the tyres. A tank mounted on the front loader shifts the centre of gravity forwards, puts a load on the front axle and may lighten the rear axle. With a rear lifting device, the effect is the opposite, which may reduce the steering grip of the front wheels.
Whilst driving, keep the container as low as the operating instructions and safe ground clearance allow. A load raised high increases the risk of overturning and impairs visibility. Basic design data Check these values before filling the tank.
Mass of the liquid. Use the product’s density if you are transporting anything other than water.
Total load. Include the tank, rack, fittings and accessories in your calculation.
Permitted loads. Check the specifications for the tractor, axles, tyres and the attachment.
Focus. Bear in mind the distance of the load from the tractor, as this distance increases the load moment.
Transporting an IBC container by tractor requires it to be securely fastened
An IBC container requires a rack that supports the base of the container and prevents it from moving forwards, backwards or sideways. Forklift tines alone do not provide sufficient securing. The rack must be locked to the tractor in the manner specified by the manufacturer, and the pins or locking bolts on the quick-release coupling must be fully engaged.
The condition and load-bearing capacity of the lashing equipment must be checked. Worn straps, twisted attachment points or makeshift chains may fail when braking. The lashing must not compress the plastic container or rub against the valve, cap or sharp edge of the metal cage.
Initial inspection of the fixing Carry out the check with the tank both empty and full.
Quick-release fastener. Visually check the locks and make sure the rack cannot come loose.
Tank support. Check that the tank cannot slide or lift off its base.
Valve and cover. Close the valve, fit the protective cap and check that the filler cap is tight.
Re-inspection. Stop after a short drive and check that the fastenings are tight and that there are no leaks.
The liquid moves around inside the tank during acceleration, braking and cornering. An underfilled tank can cause severe sloshing, which alters the behaviour of the combination whilst driving. The driver must allow for a longer braking distance than usual and avoid sudden steering manoeuvres.
Safe transport depends on the whole system: the rack supports the load, the locking mechanisms hold it in place and the tractor remains under control.
Visibility, lights and markings on public roads
The load or rack must not obstruct the driver’s field of vision. A front loader’s hopper may obstruct the view of the road surface near the tractor, whilst a rear hopper may obstruct rear visibility. Mirrors or other approved visibility solutions may be required, depending on the configuration of the combination.
The container, rack or lashing equipment must not obscure the headlights, direction indicators, rear lights, reflectors or number plate. If the load obscures any mandatory lights or the number plate, the combination must be fitted with a replacement solution that meets the requirements. The visibility of the tractor’s slow-moving vehicle sign and any end-of-train lights must also be checked.
Width, length and overhangs determine whether additional markings or other equipment are required. Measure the combination in its actual transport configuration. Also assess whether the tractor can safely fit within the lane and pass through junctions without the trailer hitting road signs, crash barriers or oncoming traffic.

It is advisable to check the mounting method using the separate instructions before the first journey and whenever the rack is replaced.
The driving speed depends on the tractor and the combination
The tractor’s maximum permitted speed alone does not determine a safe speed for the situation. The vehicle category entered in the register, the tractor’s design, tyres, brakes and attached equipment may limit the speed. The driver must be familiar with the specifications of their own tractor and ensure that the manufacturer of any mountings or attachments does not specify a lower operating speed.
A liquid load increases the braking distance and may cause the vehicle to lean more when cornering. Wet or icy roads, road camber and potholes exacerbate this effect. Slow down before bends and junctions, avoid heavy braking and maintain a safe distance from the vehicle in front.

Plan your route in advance. A narrow road, a steep side slope, a low underpass or a busy junction can make even the shortest route a poor choice. If you are unfamiliar with how the combination behaves when the tank is full, practise in a closed area before setting off on public roads.
Check the fluid specifications and vehicle-specific limits
Water does not generally give rise to the same transport requirements as a chemical classified as dangerous. A preservative, fuel or other chemical may be subject to the regulations governing the transport of dangerous goods. The product’s safety data sheet sets out the classification, packaging information and specific transport instructions. If necessary, this should be confirmed with the supplier of the substance or the relevant authority.
The container must be labelled with details of its contents, and any incorrect label left over from previous use must not mislead the driver or emergency services personnel. Before setting off, also check the plastic part of the container, the metal cage, the pallet, the valve and the seals. A cracked, rusted or leaking IBC container has no place on the road.
