Proper securing of an IBC container to a rack is based on three factors: (1) the container is always in the same position on the rack, (2) the fastenings prevent both lateral movement and rotation, and (3) the locking mechanisms ensure that nothing can come loose due to vibration. Lateral movement The most common reason for the harness “slipping” is a strap that is too tight and only tightened at the top.

Practical securing: prevent movement and twisting without the need for specialised tools
When the aim is repeatability, make the binding a “standard procedure”: the same straps, the same routes and the same method of tightening. In practice, this means choosing two main ties that form an X-shaped support (crosswise) or, at the very least, a diagonal support that creates distinct angles. The angle of the diagonal support is important: the more the binding acts solely in the vertical direction, the less it resists lateral movement.
When using an IBC with a metal frame, it is advisable to make use of the rack’s designated attachment points – not random points, which may scratch the plastic container or the edges of the cloth. If you have different applications (watering, washing, preservative), create a single lashing pattern and only add a third “safety strap” as and when necessary, such as when the route is bumpy or the speed is higher. The most important thing is that the extra cloth doesn’t disrupt the basic logic.
Also bear in mind that the tank’s fill level affects its behaviour: a completely full or almost empty tank is often easier to control than one that is half-full, as this is when the liquid has the most room to move around. If the nature of the work allows, try to avoid long journeys with a “half-full” load, or take extra precautions and reduce your speed.
When tightening, do so “evenly”: first apply pre-tension to both end straps, then tighten them fully in turn. This prevents the container from becoming skewed whilst you are tightening it. Finally, secure the loose end of the ratchet strap neatly (e.g. with a Velcro strip or a knot) so that it does not rub against the frame and loosen the fastening.
When the suspension prevents movement in every direction, driving becomes “normal” – you don’t have to constantly compensate for the load shifting by adjusting the steering.
Locks and fixing points: ensure they are mechanical
Securing the load is only part of the picture: the fastenings and attachment points determine whether the load will stay intact when subjected to vibration. A good rule of thumb is that every critical function should have a clear “locked/unlocked” status that you can see at a glance. This makes pre-ride checks quick and means you’re not left relying on a hunch.
Tractors (with front loaders or rear lifters) and wheel loaders often exhibit different dynamic behaviour: on a wheel loader, the chassis and load may sway in a different way to those on a tractor, and speeds and turning radii may vary depending on the working situation. Therefore, the attachment points must be such that the slings do not “climb” along the edge, and the angle does not cause the sling to tear. If the scaffold has its own sling lugs or attachment points, use them – they are usually positioned so that the forces are transferred to the frame in a controlled manner.
When working with preservatives or other chemicals, also be mindful of corrosion and splashes: metal surfaces, fastenings and the metal parts of cloths may be damaged if washing and maintenance are neglected.
